vorshlag > Our EVO X was past the break in point of ~1200 miles so it was time for an oil and filter change. We like to do oil changes every 3000 miles, and more often for track use.
vorshlag > The EVO X uses 5 quarts of 5W20 or 5W30 oil. We always use synthetic oil (Mobile 1 or Syntec) and Wix or Mobile 1 oil filters.
vorshlag > Step one - get the car into the air
vorshlag > The area you need to get to is near the right front wheel. There is an inspection cover that is made specifically for oil and oil filter changes
vorshlag > Remove this inspection cover - 9 bolts hold it in place.
vorshlag > With the inspection cover removed you can now see the oil filter and oil pan drain plug. There are several other drain plugs (center diff, transaxle) - don't remove those!

Getting the oil filter off can be a chore - I used the proper filter wrench and still had to fight with it for a bit, and lost some skin. The inspection cover hole could be larger and make this job a lot easier. I found that by sticking the wrench on the filter in the main hole and snaking my arm through the oil pan hole gave enough leverage to get it off. The original filter was put on by a gorilla.
vorshlag > This tool is sometimes needed for oil filter removal - an "import style" small diameter oil filter removal wrench with an angled handle. Pick one up at any parts store. Don't get the "large" one used for some domestic oil filters.
vorshlag > Get your drain pan ready (in this case we used a resealable 5 gallon bucket, sitting on a transmission jack).
vorshlag > Loosen the oil filter by hand (if possible) or with the oil filter wrench. Once the seal from the filter to engine is broken oil will start to drain out - let it drain for a minute or so and then remove the filter. Once the old filter is out it can be inverted over your drain pan overnight to allow it to drain fully. Dispose of the filter at the same place you take oil to be recycled - your auto parts store should take it all back (by law).
