vorshlag > First step in any major project: get the car up in the air, disconnect the battery (negative cable first), get the fluids out of the car (radiator/engine coolant, fuel in the fuel tank, engine and transmission oil, etc) then you can begin dis-assembly.
vorshlag > To make the stock engine removal and LS1 V8 installaiton SO MUCH easier we recommend that you remove the "Front End". This entails a minimal amount of work: remove radiator, then the front bumper cover (2 big bolts + 8 screens), then the headlights, "Grill surround" (still installed in this picture), then the upper radiator cover. It all unbolts in about 30-45 minutes...
vorshlag > The 4 studs exposed in this picture were where the structural crossmember was mounted behind the crash bumper. There are two small spot welds that have to be drilled out, which are not structural, but everything else unbolts.
vorshlag > Now you can "get up in there" easily and work on disconnecting all wiring, lines, and unbolting everything to remove the stock engine. You will thank yourself later for removing the front end, trust us!
vorshlag > Skip ahead a few steps and here's a better picture the swap candidate with the front end off, and on a lift for easier access to everything. A lift is great if you have one, but not necessary for most of the work needed.

vorshlag > To install the LS1 V8 it helps greatly to lower the K-member, as shown in this picture. There are 4 bolts that connect the K-member to the chassis, and they are either loosened greatly or removed completely (the struts will keep the K-member from falling away completely). This extra "head room" will allow the rear sump of the LS1 engine clear the K-member.
vorshlag > Here a floor jack is used to temporarily hold the K-member in place.
