Vorshlag E30 V8 "GRM Challenge" Build
Pictures of the Vorshlag Team's Grassroots Motorsports $2010 Challenge project E30. The "$200X GRM Challenge" is an annual shootout among 75+ teams, where each group builds a car to compete in an event that includes: drag race, autocross and car show. The entire car has to be built for under $2010 (and each year you get +$1 more to play with). Its a great exercise in creativity, fabrication skill, chassis/engine tuning, and driving ability!
We started with a non-running $500 1986 BMW 325e, got it running, pulled the stock drivetrain, and started test fitting V8 engines. We're using 15x10" steel wheels and 275/35/15 Hoosier A6 tires, a 5.3L '04 Chevy truck "LM7" motor (iron block/alum heads, part of the LS1 family), a V6 Camaro T5 (that broke!), and built box flares to cover the tires. We ran it in the $2010 event and did "OK", tweaked it some for the $2011 event - which we won! Now the car has been prepped beyond that budget level with an aluminum "L33" 5.3L engine, new T5, 18x11" CCW wheels, AST coilovers, and more.
